With just a month to go before the official lineup for the 82nd Venice International Film Festival is revealed, the buzz is already building. And one thing’s for sure: the Lido is set to shine with a dazzling array of stars, just as it does every year.
According to Variety, some of the biggest names expected to make an appearance include Dwayne Johnson, Angelina Jolie, Emily Blunt, Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, Idris Elba, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Ayo Edebiri, Oscar Isaac, and Emma Stone.
While artistic director Alberto Barbera is still putting the final touches on the festival’s official selection, a few titles are already being tipped for a Venice debut. High on that list is After the Hunt, Luca Guadagnino’s latest thriller, centered around the #MeToo movement, and starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri.
Guadagnino won’t be the only Italian filmmaker in the spotlight. Venice has always championed Italian cinema, and this year looks no different. Pietro Marcello is expected to compete with a biopic on legendary actress Eleonora Duse, portrayed by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, while Golden Lion winner Gianfranco Rosi is set to return with his new documentary Sotto le nuvole (Under the Clouds).
Also likely to feature is a new film from Laura Samani. After the critical success of her debut Small Body, she’s back with Un anno di scuola (A Year of School), though it’s not yet clear which section of the festival it will appear in.
On the international front, several high-profile Hollywood productions are rumored to be part of the official selection. Among them: The Smashing Machine by Benny Safdie, starring Dwayne Johnson as UFC legend Mark Kerr, with Emily Blunt as his wife, Bugonia by Yorgos Lanthimos, once again teaming up with Emma Stone after their Poor Things success; Couture by Alice Winocour, starring Angelina Jolie and Jay Kelly by Noah Baumbach with George Clooney. Finally Frankenstein by Guillermo del Toro, a Netflix adaptation of the horror classic, will feature Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth as protagonists.
