Cinecittà announces achievement of all 2025 National Recovery and Resilience Plan goals

Italy's iconic film studio thrives with four new soundstages completed, 96% of funds invested, full expansion ahead of schedule with 60% boost in capacity expected

Yesterday Cinecittà announced a major milestone for its future and that of the Italian audiovisual industry: it has met all objectives set for June 30, under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). This includes completion of construction and renovation works on 4 soundstages, the creation of new production facilities, and early progress on all works planned for 9 stages (5 of which are new builds) originally scheduled for completion by June 2026. This achievement was made possible thanks to the support coming from the Italian Ministry of Culture.

Specifically, by the end of June 2025, Cinecittà has completed the reconstruction of Soundstage 7, the demolition and reconstruction of Soundstage 19 and the renovation of Soundstages 20 and 21.

In addition to meeting all 2025 targets, Cinecittà is also ahead of schedule to complete all remaining objectives before the planned June 2026 deadline. These include the construction of Soundstage 22 (which, together with the new Soundstage 25, will become the largest on the lot, while being one of the largest in Europe, already selected by Mel Gibson for filming The Resurrection of the Christ starting this September), as well as Soundstages 23, 24, 25, and 26. This series of construction, technological, and modernization efforts will give Cinecittà a new face in 2026—just ahead of its 90th anniversary—boosting production capacity by 60%.

Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of Cinecittà, stated: “I’m proud to announce, less than a year into my tenure, that we’ve reached all of Cinecittà’s PNRR targets for June 2025 and are even on track to complete the entire project before the June 2026 deadline. It’s been an enormous team effort, carried out with the full dedication of the Cinecittà team, at a time when the Studios are experiencing a renaissance, welcoming prestigious productions from both Italy and abroad. Cinecittà is finally ready to host them in the most modern, efficient, and competitive way possible through every stage of the production chain, from project proposal to final film, series, documentary, or commercial.”

The “Cinecittà Project” under the PNRR for the development of the film industry provides €232 million in EU funding to enhance the competitiveness of Italy’s film and audiovisual sector. Key goals include strengthening Cinecittà Studios to improve both the quality and quantity of production offerings, and attracting major national, European, and international productions. The plan also aims to improve Cinecittà’s services for preserving the digital audiovisual heritage, minimizing risks of damage or loss, and enhancing digitization and cataloging of the vast Luce Archive.

This marks an unprecedented expansion effort since Cinecittà’s founding, transforming it into a more welcoming, better-equipped, and technologically advanced hub for all types of production. Furthermore, under the leadership of CEO Cacciamani, new additions have been made to the original plan and are set to open soon. These include a new 550-seat cinema hall, fully equipped with cutting-edge technology, designed to host premieres, special screenings, and film-themed events, a newly refurbished film shooting pool, covering over 2,000 square meters and previously used in iconic films, now available again for water-based productions and, finally, a new permanent outdoor set, located in the backlot, dedicated to large-scale cinematic and event productions.

As of today’s PNRR milestone, of the total €232 million investment, Cinecittà has already deployed €183 million, with an additional €39 million in the process of being formalized. This brings the total amount committed or in process to almost 96% of the entire budget. All public tenders have been published, contracts signed, the scheduled soundstages completed, and progress is ahead of schedule for the works originally planned for June 2026. This stands as a model of efficiency and reliability, with few equals among Italian companies involved in the PNRR initiative.

The work completed on the 4 soundstages includes full building renovation, upgrades to all technical systems, improvements in energy, thermal, acoustic, and lighting efficiency, and installation of photovoltaic panels, aimed at increasing competitiveness and ensuring top-tier facilities for all types of productions. This enhancement will be further reinforced by the completion of the 5 new soundstages, which will not only confirm Cinecittà as the leading audiovisual production hub in Italy, but also elevate it into direct competition with the top studios across Europe and beyond.

In parallel, significant progress has been made on the Luce Archive conservation and valorization plan, one of the most important audiovisual collections in Europe. The objective is the complete digitization of its cinematic assets, with more than 70,000 film clips from 1924 to the present, along with extensive digitization and cataloging of its photographic archive, aiming to catalog and digitize 3 million photographs. This effort will ensure the preservation, care, and public accessibility of a priceless cultural heritage.
